Is There Such A Thing As A Stuttering Medication?
If you have problems with stuttering you are only too aware that there are no quick cures for this cumbersome speech disorder. It may not overtly seem like an actual debilitating problem, but it can make social interaction more difficult and can lead onto low self esteem and numerous other anxiety related problems.
Recent research shows that approximately 5% of all people will struggle with stuttering at some stage throughout their life span. This is usually restricted to childhood, and overall 1% of the population suffer from it. For any adults who have the speech disorderthe thought of alleviating a stutter will be very positive.
Modern medicine developing new ways every day to treat different illnesses and conditions. Apart from all out cures, some medical treatments are found to help reduce symptoms and improve the lives of those suffering from different conditions. Surely then there must be some type of medication that could really be helpful with stuttering.
For a stuttering medication to be developed, it is necessary to get to the bottom of the disorder and its roots. Unfortunately this is a very complicated area. It has been deduced that stammering is partly genetic, and in some cases of developmental stuttering, research is ongoing to find if there is a gene relation associated with it. Then some people can develop a stammer after a traumatic physical or psychological experience. The medical treatment for this may be some what different to someone who had stuttered from birth, or developed it over time.
Things were done differently in the past; a variety of drugs would have been prescribed, in the hope that one would become the perfectly tailored stuttering medication. The patient was therefore an unsuspecting guinea pig. Would you believe it that some of these drugs contained anti-convulsants, anti-depressants, benzodiazepines, anti-psychotic and anti-hypertensive medication. And you thought you had to be a junkie to be on such a cocktail. Research carried out to find the effectiveness of these drugs has not come to any sound conclusions, but it has been noted that some can decrease stuttering, BUT more importantly there have been some serious side effects recorded of taking the „stuttering medication”.
One particular drug known as Pagoclone is currently being tested as a medicine for stuttering. It has been used in other areas, without enough major results to make it viable. But it's attention has currently been turned toward stuttering and counteracting some of the causes and symptoms of this disorder. Currently there are not enough results gathererd, but those who deal with this problem are waiting to see if this might be the answer to the search for a stuttering medication.
It seems therefore that if a good medication is found for the disorder, it is not likely to be one 100% effective. Although, when used in combination with other treatments and therapies, it can greatly improve a stutterers chances of achieving near fluent speech, and that will bring relief to many people.
Only time will tell if any drug can make safe and significant differences for stutterers. Until that time approaches, finding a support group can be brilliant for making sufferes feel accepted and to develop a stronger sense of self worth. This can make a sufferer feel worthy and that you are not alone and eliminate much of the anxiety associated with the disorder.
